Maipo

The Maipo Valley lies between the Andes Mountains and the Coastal Range, and the nation’s capital, Santiago, is located in the center. Because of the proximity to the city and the region’s excellent climatic conditions, Chile’s earliest producers of noble French varieties established their vineyards and wineries in this area. A Mediterranean climate with low annual rainfall (300 mm / 11.9 in), high daytime and low nighttime temperatures, and stony soils assure the excellence of these noble grapes; especially the Cabernet Sauvignon.

The individual areas within the valley are unique due to their north–south orientation and varying altitudes, which results in very different wines from the same grape. The range of variation possible within the valley motivates producers to blend wines made from grapes grown in different sectors of the valley to maximize their particular qualities and create very special wines.
