Appearance:
Semi-intense ruby-red in color, with cherry-red highlights and good
clarity. Its exceptionally intense color reveals the Chilean origins of this Nebbiolo,
and its legs suggest a very concentrated wine.
Aromas:
Fresh fruit leads on the intense nose, with notes of strawberry and blueberry
complemented by spices such as green pepper, cardamom, and a hint of turmeric,
all backed up by well-integrated toast and oak.
The intense, fruit-filled nose is accompanied by well-integrated notes of oak that
complement the wine’s rich fruity character without overpowering it, despite nearly
2 years of ageing in French and American oak barrels.
Palate:
Direct and well structured, with a sustained linear mid-palate that emanates
strong tannins that are firm but never harsh. The impressive balance between acidity
and alcohol maintains the wine on the palate and continues on to the long, pleasing
finish. The palate features all of the components of Nebbiolo grown in exceptional
places: powerful acidity and enormous tannins that will allow the wine to age very
well for many years to come.
As a tribute to the clearly Chilean identity of this Nebbiolo, the wine was fined and
the tannins softened for greater elegance and to allow it to be enjoyed now, without
having to wait for it to age for decades in the bottle.
Winemaker’s Notes
This wine has all the elements needed to enter into the category of “great wines.”
This impressively concentrated Nebbiolo was modeled after the great Italian Barolo
wines, although great care was taken to preserve its Chilean identity. We have
crafted its style to obtain intense color and tame tannins without masking its varietal
characteristics. We used a bit of Carignan in the final blend to help define the style
of this new wine.
This is the first truly great Chilean Nebbiolo, and wine lovers worldwide will delight
in its tremendous balance and elegance. It is very fruity and enjoyable today, but
it will continue to improve as it ages in the bottle over the next ten years.
Serving suggestions
Pair this wine with red meats, young boar, or free-range chicken. Even better, with
tripe, kidney, and strong, soft cheeses such as camembert and brie.
